The raven’s provocative cry, and the only word it utters in response to the distraught narrator’s questions, ‘nevermore’ evolves from the answer to the bird’s name to a prophecy of the more macabre. "Despite his birth and death occurring in America, it was Edgar Allen Poe’s formative years spent in the British Isles, and London in particular, that are said to have provided the most likely inspiration for his English-gothic style that is characterized by both mystery and the macabre.
Poe's darkest and most well known poem, The Raven, was in fact inspired by a real raven - Grip - the beloved pet of English writer Charles Dickens, who Dickens taught to speak and who is mentioned in one of his novels."
